Press the accelerator in an electric car and the motor delivers full traction from a standstill, while the battery lying under the floor makes the car heavier than an equivalent petrol model. Precisely because of this weight and instant traction, the tyre here needs a higher load index and a more durable tread compound, and often rolling-noise damping for a quiet cabin. The segment is especially useful for heavier, more powerful models and electric SUVs, where the battery weight puts the greatest strain on the tyre. How to choose tyres for an electric car

What sets an EV tyre apart from an ordinary one is not the lettering on the sidewall but its construction and the manufacturer's approval for use on electric cars. Because of the battery, the casing is reinforced and the load index is higher - often XL or the new HL (High Load) marking. Torque from a standstill wears the tread faster, so the compound is made more durable. In the quiet cabin of an electric car the rolling sound is more audible, which is why some models carry a foam layer inside to dampen it. In our catalogue most EV-compatible models carry the XL marking specifically.

  • Load index. First check the car's placard on the door pillar or in the manual and don't go below the stated minimum - on a heavy EV, too low a load index risks tyre deformation, overheating and an increased blowout risk.
  • HL or XL. If the manufacturer requires HL, don't fit an ordinary XL instead. Pirelli notes that an HL tyre of the same size carries roughly 20% more weight than a standard one and 6-9% more than an XL.
  • Speed rating. Don't lower it - many electric cars are powerful and fast, so keep the class specified by the factory.
  • Quietness. Foam-lined tyres (ContiSilent, Pirelli PNCS, Goodyear SoundComfort) reduce cabin rolling noise; as Continental points out, ContiSilent can cut it by up to 9 dB.
  • Season. For winter, look for the 3PMSF alpine symbol - some of our EV models carry it, and in Latvia it is mandatory in winter.

Not every electric car needs a specifically EV-marked tyre. In TyreReviews' independent 2024 test an ordinary sports tyre came out on top, while their 2025 test concluded that the difference between dedicated EV tyres and good standard tyres is small. If the car is light or the budget is tight, a quality standard tyre with the right load index works just as well - what matters is the load class and the manufacturer's approval, not the lettering itself.

That's why it's worth looking at the fuel-efficiency class on the EU label, not just the lettering on the sidewall.
Yes. The CSDD states that, since 2024, from 1 December to 1 March, cars with a gross weight of up to 3.5 t must have winter tyres with the 3PMSF (mountain and snowflake) symbol and at least 4 mm of tread. The requirement applies to electric cars too, and all-season tyres marked only M+S are no longer sufficient.
On the sidewall, look for the marking EV, Elect or electric, or the relevant manufacturer's EV-compatibility symbol. An additional sign is a high load index with an XL or HL marking. The most reliable source is the manufacturer's specification for the specific model.
